There are dozens of diapers on the market and they all promise the same thing: dryness, comfort and protection. The good news is that the choice comes down to four criteria and three stages of your baby's life. This guide explains those criteria in practical terms, shows what changes from newborn to walking baby, compares the ranges we sell and ends with a method for testing without wasting money.
The four criteria that decide everything
1. Absorption (and above all, speed)
A good diaper is not the thickest one; it is the one that absorbs quickly and spreads the liquid through the core, so the surface feels dry to the touch within a few seconds. Slow absorption leaves the skin in contact with moisture, and that is what causes diaper rash. To check: when you change the diaper, touch the inner layer. If it is cold and damp, the diaper is saturating or absorbing slowly. Total absorbency matters mainly at night; we cover this in overnight diapers.
2. A fit without marks
Red marks on the waist and thighs come from three things: a size that is too small, stiff elastics or a diaper fastened too tightly. A well-designed diaper has an elastic waist that stretches with your baby, soft side barriers and wide, repositionable tabs. Light marks that fade within minutes are normal; deep marks or ones that stay red are not. In that case, first go up a size, then consider changing brand. The size guide is in how to choose the right size.
3. Materials and skin
For most babies, any diaper from a well-known brand will do. For sensitive skin, look for diapers without fragrance or lotion, with a soft-touch inner layer and a breathable outer layer. Eco certifications (Nordic Swan, FSC) also guarantee the absence of unwanted substances. We go into detail in diapers for sensitive skin.
4. Mobility
From the moment your baby starts crawling, the diaper has to keep up with their movement: an elastic waist all the way round, a narrower cut between the legs and barriers that do not open when your baby sits down. This is where the "Activity" ranges and diaper pants make sense.
What changes at each stage
| Stage | Priority | What to look for | Recommended ranges |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newborn (0 to 3 months) | Skin and belly button | Very soft inner layer, umbilical cut-out, wetness indicator, Sizes 0 to 2 | Dodot Sensitive, Bambo Nature, Moomin Baby |
| Baby (3 to 12 months) | Absorption and price | A core that lasts 3 to 4 hours by day and the whole night, large packs, Sizes 3 and 4 | Dodot Bebé Seco, Dodot Sensitive, Moomin Baby, Bambo Nature |
| Active baby (9 months onwards) | Mobility | Elastic waist, flexible fit, diaper pants for standing changes, Sizes 4 to 6 | Dodot Activity, Bambo Nature Pants, Moomin Baby |
The ranges we sell, explained
- Dodot Sensitive: Dodot's softest range, designed for newborns and sensitive skin. Umbilical cut-out in Sizes 0 and 1, wetness indicator, Sizes 0 to 6. This is the one we recommend to start with. Dodot Sensitive collection.
- Dodot Bebé Seco Extra Absorption: the extra-absorbent range, from Size 3 to Size 6, with the most economical large packs we stock (boxes of 186 and 248 units). The choice for the months of highest consumption and for nights. Dodot Bebé Seco collection.
- Dodot Activity Extra: cut and waist designed for babies who crawl and walk, from Size 3+ to Size 6+. A flexible fit that does not open with movement. Dodot Activity collection.
- Moomin Baby: a Nordic diaper, dermatologically tested, fragrance-free, with balanced absorption and stable pricing across sizes (Size 1 to Size 6, standard packs and Big Pack). A good "all-round" option for babies without skin problems. Moomin Baby collection.
- Bambo Nature: the eco-friendly benchmark, with Nordic Swan and FSC certification, no fragrance or lotion, from Size 0 to Size 7, plus diaper pants from Size 4 to Size 8. In the Paper Bag format, the price per diaper is on a par with Dodot. Bambo Nature collection.
You will find them all in baby diapers. To compare prices per unit, see cheap diapers in Portugal.
Extra-absorbent diapers: when they are worth it
Extra absorbency costs more and does not always pay off. It pays off in three situations: for the night-time diaper (10 to 12 hours), for babies who drink a lot of fluids from 6 months, and on trips or long naps. It does not pay off for daytime changes every 2 to 3 hours, when a regular diaper is nowhere near saturated. The most economical strategy is to use a regular range by day and an extra-absorbent range (Dodot Bebé Seco, "+" sizes) only at night: that is 5 regular diapers for every 1 extra-absorbent one.
Diapers that do not leave marks: what to look for
Marks are the number one reason for switching brands, and most of the time the brand is not to blame. Check in this order: the size (if your baby is in the last kilo of the range, go up), the way it is fastened (the tabs should point upwards, not inwards), the clothing (tight bodysuits push the waist in) and only then the diaper. If marks persist with the right size and fit, look for a diaper with an elastic waist all the way round and wider leg elastics. Moomin Baby and Bambo Nature are usually well tolerated by babies with fuller thighs.
Diapers for active babies
When your baby starts crawling, the problems change: the diaper opens at the back when they sit down, slips when they walk, and changing them lying down becomes a struggle. There are two solutions: ranges with a flexible fit (Dodot Activity Extra) and diaper pants (Bambo Nature Pants from 7 kg), which go on standing up like underwear and tear at the sides to come off. Many families use pants during the day and a classic diaper at night. For more on this stage, see diapers for a 1-year-old.
How to test a diaper in 48 hours
Buy the smallest pack available and use it for two days. Note four things: leaks (where and when), marks on the skin (whether they fade within minutes or not), how the inner layer feels after 3 hours (dry or damp) and how easy it is to adjust. If it passes, buy the large box; if it fails on one point, first try the next size up before changing brand. The small packs from Moomin Baby (25 units in Size 1) and Bambo Nature (22 to 44 units) are good for this.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best diaper brand?
There is no single best for everyone. Dodot Sensitive for newborns, Dodot Bebé Seco for the months of highest consumption and for nights, Dodot Activity or diaper pants for babies who walk, Bambo Nature if you want eco-friendly, and Moomin Baby for a good all-round balance. The 48-hour test decides.
Is a more expensive diaper better?
Not necessarily. The price reflects the pack format as much as the quality. Compare the price per diaper and the performance in the test, not the price of the pack.
Should I use the same diaper day and night?
You can, but many families save money by using a regular range by day and an extra-absorbent one only at night.
When should we switch to diaper pants?
When your baby crawls well or walks and changing them lying down becomes difficult, usually between 9 and 14 months.
Summary
Choose by stage: skin and belly button for newborns, absorption and price from 3 to 12 months, mobility once your baby walks. Check the four criteria (fast absorption, a fit without marks, materials suited to the skin, freedom of movement), test for 48 hours with a small pack and only then buy in bulk.
